Back when I had first gotten out of college and I didn’t have all those pesky little responsibilities like student loans, car payments, or paying energysavings.com bills, I used to travel all the time and one of my favorite destinations was a little city just north of the border known as Montreal.

Montreal is a veritable cultural hub of a city offering all the modern conveniences many people from the States would come to expect while also providing a cultural experience that is decidedly different. Most people living in this bustling metropolis are bilingual (French and English languages) but you will still find echoes of the past through the customs, food, mannerisms, attitudes and everything else tracing back to French heritage.

Many different cultures call Montreal home including a Muslim community that is still in its infancy and if you are looking for a great place to party then Montreal is the place. These people know how to celebrate and whether it’s the Jazz Festival or the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival, you’re sure to see folks young and old dancing in the streets and just plain having a good time. Just because Canada and Montreal happen to be north of the United States doesn’t mean you won’t find an experience far from ordinary.

While traveling through Winnipeg, a city packed with a rich past, you can’t help but feel at home, with all the hospitable people around. Winnipeg being half prairie, half metropolitan, it’s a sure delight to see so many galleries, restaurants and museums.

Winnipeg has something more to offer, while visiting here you must not forget to pay a visit to the Royal Canadian Mint. With its unique architectural design, and the marveling glass tower, it will intrigue you. This facility is a high-tech high-volume, producing over 15 million coins each day. Literally Royal Canadian Mint produces billions of coins each year. It produces all of Canada’s’ coins as well as producing coins for countries worldwide. Guided tours are offered through their state of the art manufacturing facility. It’s an engineering dream, to be able to witness all the presses.

Adjacent to the facility there is a museum, where you and your family can make your own coin souvenir, or hold a 99.99 gold bar worth over 400,000. Their boutique is just as impressive, whether you collect or not. You will drool over the finely minted coins. You will find Royal Canadian Mint is closed on Christmas and New Years Day.

Victoria contains breathtaking architecture, a harbor that is home to both classic and modern seafaring vessels, intriguing landmarks like the Royal London Wax museum and natural wonders like the Olympic mountains. When traveling to this remarkable city in British Columbia, consider booking a carriage tour as a unique way to explore Victoria, as opposed to a traditional sightseeing bus.

Make sure you dress appropriately when traveling by horse-drawn carriage, as the unforeseen rain shower may put a damper on your experience if you’re not prepared. Many carriages do have accommodations for an awning type cover to shield you from the weather.

If you are traveling with a large party, keep in mind that a carriage tour can only hold a limited amount of people, so you might have to book more than one carriage if there are more than six or eight adults and children in your party. Also, if you’re visiting Victoria in the winter, odds are that you won’t be able to find any carriage tours operating due to the weather and cold temperatures. If you want to experience Victoria after the sun goes down, tour operators do offer midnight carriage rides, although your visibility may be limited.

The province of Alberta, Canada is in the western part of the country and is bordered on the west by British Columbia, on the east by Saskatchewan, to the north is the Northwest Territories and to the south the state of Montana. Although much of the province is grassy plains the southwest and northern regions are mountainous and offer some of the most beautiful scenery on earth. Much of Alberta’s wild wilderness can be found in the National Parks.

Banff National Park is 65 miles west of Calgary in the Canadian Rockies, it was the provinces first and it is the most heavily visited. The towering snow capped mountains, sparkling ice fields, alpine meadows and natural hot springs make it a major recreational area.

The Wood buffalo National Park is in the northeastern portion of the province, it is the largest park in Canada, one of the largest in the world and was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its rich biodiversity.

Jasper National Park adjoins three other parks; it has towering mountains of over 12,000 feet and is a wild wilderness with bear, moose, elk, mule deer and bighorn sheep. Jasper’s 4200 square miles has overwhelmingly beautiful scenery.
